Kat awoke just after seven a.m. to the aroma of brewed coffee and banging pots and pans. She followed her nose downstairs to find Jace making breakfast in the kitchen. She kissed him and poured a cup of coffee. “You must be exhausted. How did Declan’s surgery go?”

“Okay, as far as I know. He had a blow to the head that hit a major artery,” Jace explained. “The emergency surgery reduced the pressure on his brain, but it’s too soon to tell anything. He’s in a medically induced coma.”

“Wow.” Kat sipped her coffee as she flashed back to the black sedan in the alley. Declan’s life had changed in an instant. She could have suffered the same fate if the driver had not swerved to avoid her. “He might not recover?”

Jace nodded. “He’s still in pretty rough shape. Did you talk to Fiona this morning?”

“No. I’ll give her the news on the ride to the hospital.” Kat recalled Fiona’s reaction last night. Hopefully Fiona would be more like her usual self today.

“Just as well. Now that he’s made it through surgery, you’ll have better news to share.” Jace wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her. “That could have been you instead of Declan. Thank goodness you’re okay.”

“The car went straight for Declan, Jace. The driver was gunning for him in the alley. They weren’t after me.” She shuddered as she remembered how the car had steered around her at the last minute. “Someone intentionally tried to kill him.”

Jace shrugged. “That’s what I told the police at the hospital last night. I thought it was personal too, but they don’t. Said it’s random, probably an impaired driver who fled the scene. They see it all too often.”

If that were the case, she wouldn’t be standing here. “That’s crazy. A drunk wouldn’t have swerved to miss me. Somebody wants him dead, Jace, but who?”

“Hard to say. Maybe some of his former cronies? As an ex-con, maybe he knows a secret or two. Whoever it is might want to silence him.” Jace scooped scrambled eggs onto a plate for Kat and handed it to her.

Kat grabbed two slices of toast from the toaster and sat down at the kitchen table. “He had twenty years to speak up. Why wait till he’s released from prison?”

“Maybe they aren’t taking any chances. And they couldn’t get to him in prison.”

“People get hit in prison all the time.”

Jace chuckled. “In the movies they do. I’ll bet it’s a lot harder to knock off an inmate in real life. It would definitely be harder to make a getaway.”

Kat filled Jace in on her recollection of the car and ‘R’ license plates. “Did you see or remember anything else? Like the make of the car?”

“No.” Jace shook his head as he joined her at the kitchen table. “I saw even less than you did. I was watching you, not the car.”

“Do the police have any leads?”

“No, but they think it’s a random hit and run. And since it involves an ex-con, I get the sense it’s not high on their list.
